There’s about to be a new crop of visitors to the Gunnison-Crested Butte area. That’s because the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport will soon welcome a nonstop flight from Chicago O’Hare on Saturdays throughout ski season. The hope is that more midwesterners will be able to experience all that this amazing resort area has to offer by arriving more quickly and efficiently.
According to Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Gunnison Valley Rural Transportation Authority, SkyWest Airlines will operate the service on behalf of United Express. The 66-seat jets will fly between Crested Butte airport and O’Hare on Saturdays between December 21 and March 29, which is the peak of ski season and also overlaps the holidays.
The flight leaves O’Hare at 9:45 a.m., arriving in Crested Butte at 11:40 a.m., in time for passengers to sneak in a few afternoon runs. For Chicago passengers who can produce their same-day boarding pass and ID, Crested Butte Mountain Resort says they will offer a free half-day lift ticket.
Adds Crested Butte’s Scott Clarkson, “We are pleased to be growing air service into Gunnison-Crested Butte and we feel that adding this direct, non-stop service from Chicago brings a direct destination and a major United Airlines hub back to the community’s air program. This will allow guests to visit Gunnison-Crested Butte easily from several national markets beyond Chicago, as well as the Chicago market itself.”
In addition to the Chicago flight, United Airlines also has scheduled nonstop service between Denver and Houston to Crested Butte during the winter. Tickets are currently on sale for the Chicago flight on the following Saturdays: December 21, 28; January 4; February 15, 22; and March 1, 8, 22, 29 at united.com. The return flight departs Crested Butte at 12:15 p.m. and arrives back into Chicago at 3:58 p.m. local time.
