The Crested Butte’s Chili & Beer Festival is an annual event that starts every Fall. It is a famous local event that occurs at the base of the Crested Butte Mountain Resort and attracts many travelers to come and partake in the event.  As the name of the festival suggests, this is a time where amateur and experienced brewers and cooks sign up and join a competition. For the guidelines, each brewer must bring three (3) different varieties of their finest brews and serve it to all the people. This is a perfect time where all beer lovers unite. At the same time, people can also sign up and showcase their locally made chili dishes for everyone to try and enjoy.

The event is a perfect place to socialize and enjoy all the delicious chili and beer while listening to great music from a live band and note that everyone in the event would receive a disposable cup and spoon at the entrance where beer and chili would be served in all day. With locally made chili, tasty craft beer and live music, this will be a spectacle not to be missed.

There are many stories on why the Beer and Chili Festival came to be. One could say it was a basic necessity. Due to Crested Butte high altitude and cool to cold weather variations, many people needed to find many ways to keep warm. An example of keeping warm was by eating spicy food like chili and drinking alcohol but then it later evolved. Since the people of Crested Butte are sociable, it became more of a social event to share food and drinks to everyone. As time passed by, the simple social gathering became bigger and bigger until it has evolved into this big festivity which we now call the Beer and Chili Festival.

For the beer brewers contest, it is composed of different categories like Best Ale, Best Lager, Best Porter/Stout, Best Wheat/Belgian, Best Specialty and Best Cider. As for the chili making contests, we have Best Professional Chili, Best Green Chili, Best Red Chili, Best Vegetarian Chili, Best International Chili, People’s Choice and Best Amateur Chili
