This August the valley will again be part of the action of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The race is coming back to Colorado, along with great exposure for the area!
The cycling race is scheduled for August with the Stage 2 finish happening right in Mr. Crested Butte. Organizing committee member Karl Trujillo said, “This end of the valley is a perfect spot to hold an event like this. There are some changes in the event costs and so we are requesting $5,000 more than last year. But the event will run pretty much like 2011.” Last year the investment was definitely worth it. Erica Reiter, one of the local organizers, reported that from the 2011 race, the upper valley received an equivalent of $1.3 million in media coverage. She said, “We had great media impressions last year. The race organizers were extremely pleased with the CB and Mt. CB event. They’re excited to work with us in future years. We’re excited for that.” There has also been a new web site launched to spread the word on the race throughout the community – cbproghallenge.com.
Because the race is broadcast around the world it is definitely going to generate buzz around Mt. Crested Butte. Attracting tourists to the area is obviously a great boost to the local economy. Last year sales tax revenue was significant, and they hope to see even more return on the investment this year.
