There’s something special about watching the snowcats groom the trails at ski resorts after the sun has set on a blue bird day of skiing. If you’ve ever dreamed about getting behind the wheel of one of these massive machines, Crested Butte Mountain Resort has you covered! Their two-hour snowcat driving experience is now in its fourth year, and in conjunction with Prinoth, Crested Butte home owners can learn everything they need to know about the equipment that grooms their local trails.
Adds Chris Corliss, Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s Mountain Operations Manager: “We take everyone on a ‘full tour’ of the machine. We do a complete walk around, discuss the parts and functions, then get going with live drive time. It’s a totally different experience and a ton of fun, too. Our instructors are the real folks on the mountain doing real work, so it’s not a watered-down version for people who do this.”
Participants are given one-on-one instruction, and safety is of the utmost importance during this two-hour experience. Drivers spend some time in the classroom before they’re handed the reigns of a fully-functional Prinoth 275 Snowcat, which is the same machine that is used to groom the trails at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.
Classes gather twice daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and will be hosted for the remainder of the ski season. Additionally, group bookings can be made by special request. The two-hour snowcat driving experience costs $199 per person, and includes about an hour of actual driving time. The fee also includes transportation from the Lodge at Mountain Square. Friends and family are welcome to watch and take photographs from the on-site observation area, but they ask you to mention this when you book.
